Reactivity in Online Auctions

چکیده
Interactive computer systems, that is, systems in which users cyclically interact by getting and providing information, have already a widespread and increasing use in all areas of our society. One characteristic of such systems is that the user behavior affects the system behavior and vice-versa. There is strong evidence that much of the user behavior is reactive, that is, the user reacts to the instantaneous conditions at the action time. This paper presents the reactivity concept and describes a framework to model it in interactive systems, in particular Internet-based systems. We analyze an online auction within the framework. Based on eBay data, we identify attributes that affect the winner bidders’ behavior, such as the auction time to finish. This paper presents the first findings towards the formal description and understanding of reactivity patterns in an e-commerce application, which will be useful in improving the application and building novel mechanisms.

Reactivity based model to study online auctions dynamics
Online auctions have challenged many assumptions and results from the traditional economic auction theory. Observed bidder behavior in online auctions often deviates from equilibrium strategies postulated by economic theory. In this research, we consider an online auction as an information system that provides a longduration, information-rich, dynamic application environment in which users (bid...
متن کاملIntroduction to ‘ Innovative Auction Markets
This special issue of EM — Electronic Markets on ‘Innovative Auction Markets’ illustrates the increasingly pervasive and diverse applications of online auctions. From auctions for keywords tied to search engines, to B2B and financial auctions, or the use of auctions to generate predictive information for decision making — online auctions are becoming more widely applied in practice. Since the l...
متن کاملAn assessment of supply chain managers' trust in online auctions
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to empirically test the levels of trust supply chain managers exhibit regarding online auctions. The study seeks to test the hypotheses that supply chain managers with higher levels of trust in online auctions would exhibit more familiarity with online auctions, more positive relationships with suppliers, stronger focus on cost management, a stronger focus...
متن کاملA Comparative Study of Multi-Attribute Continuous Double Auction Mechanisms
Auctions have been as a competitive method of buying and selling valuable or rare items for a long time. Single-sided auctions in which participants negotiate on a single attribute (e.g. price) are very popular. Double auctions and negotiation on multiple attributes create more advantages compared to single-sided and single-attribute auctions. Nonetheless, this adds the complexity of the auctio...
متن کاملOnline Combinatorial Auctions
This paper explores the feasibility and motivation for online combinatorial auctions. It explains combinatorial auctions and shows an innovative implementation of an iterative combinatorial auction. It then introduces online auctions and highlights some research which bounds the efficiency and revenue comparison to the standard Vickrey auction. Finally, motivations for online combinatorial auct...
متن کاملTime and Online Auctions
Online auctions differ from traditional auctions in several ways, but perhaps one of the most significant is the amount of time that bidders interact with the auction mechanism. This paper examines past findings in online auctions and discusses three psychological mechanisms through which bidders may increase their valuations of an item through interaction with the auction mechanism over time. ...
